Unveiling the Hidden Impact of Neglect

mollie

I had the opportunity to attend The Mastering the Treatment of Trauma broadcast by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine. The broadcast offered invaluable insights, particularly about the profound impact of neglect on a person's life. It is crucial for professionals to identify the subtle indicators of neglect, as those who seek therapy may not necessarily present neglect as a primary issue. It was surprising to discover that neglect can have a greater negative impact on an individual than physical abuse, and many people may not even be aware that the effects of neglect are contributing to the challenges in their lives.

The broadcast's presenters shared a wealth of knowledge and expertise, discussing important topics like identifying neglect and offering strategies to help individuals who have experienced neglect. Survivors of neglect may have difficulty expressing themselves and may appear disconnected from their feelings. Many survivors experience parasympathetic numbness, which means that their body's natural relaxation system is not functioning properly, leading to a dominance of the sympathetic system responsible for the fight or flight response.  If a body stays in a state of high alert, it can lead to negative long-term impacts on health, including but not limited to severe disease.

Many people have experienced neglect or know someone who has. It's important to apply the takeaways from this broadcast to better help those struggling with mental health. One thing that experts emphasize is the concept of attunement. Essentially, this means taking the time to understand where a person is coming from and meeting them where they are. This requires being aware of their state, their needs, and acknowledging how they are feeling. Empathy and validation are key components of attunement, and they can go a long way toward helping someone feel safe. Whether you work in a field where you help people or just want to be a better friend, practicing attunement can make a big difference in how you approach those in need. Remember to stay open-minded, be present, and listen to understand, not to respond--this is what truly matters. The willingness to connect and comfort others can make a world of difference in a person’s life. I encourage everyone to try practicing attunement and see how it can help those around you and impact your relationships in a positive way.
